Virtual physiotherapy gives you expert, one-to-one musculoskeletal care over a secure, encrypted and GDPR-compliant video call - assessment, diagnosis and a personalised exercise plan, without leaving home. It is delivered personally by Roshan Khanal, an HCPC-registered physiotherapist with First Contact Physiotherapy and triage experience, and no GP referral is needed. Before booking, you can read how we keep your care safe and private in our Virtual Consultation Policy.

What is virtual physiotherapy?

The same clinical reasoning, just on screen

Virtual physiotherapy (also called online physio or telehealth physiotherapy) is a live, one-to-one consultation with your physiotherapist by video call. It follows the same structure as an in-clinic appointment: a detailed conversation about your symptoms and history, a guided movement assessment, a discussion of the findings, and a plan you agree on together.

Much of what helps people recover from musculoskeletal problems is understanding the problem, knowing what is safe to do, and following a well-progressed exercise and activity plan - all of which translate well to video. Where hands-on assessment or treatment would genuinely add value, we'll tell you honestly and can see you in person at our Cambridge clinic.

Lead MSK Physiotherapist, MSK Injury Care

HCPC-registered PhysiotherapistFirst Contact Physiotherapist

Every virtual appointment is delivered personally by Roshan, an HCPC-registered musculoskeletal physiotherapist. Alongside his private practice, Roshan works in MSK triage and has extensive experience as a First Contact Physiotherapist within NHS general practice - the role in which patients with joint, muscle and spinal problems see a physiotherapist as their first point of contact instead of a GP.

Joined-up care: where further input or management may be needed (for example investigations, medication review, injection or surgical opinion), Roshan liaises directly with your GP or consultant, with your consent, so your care stays coordinated rather than starting again from scratch.

What virtual physiotherapy can help with

Most musculoskeletal problems can be assessed and managed effectively by video. If you have any questions, please send an enquiry and we'll get back to you within a few hours, and no later than 1 working day.

Well suited to virtual care

  • Low back pain and sciatica-type symptoms
  • Neck pain and stiffness, including desk-related pain
  • Shoulder pain and reduced shoulder movement
  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot pain
  • Tendon problems (e.g. Achilles, patellar, tennis elbow, gluteal)
  • Sports and exercise-related injuries
  • Joint pain and osteoarthritis
  • Rehabilitation after surgery (once cleared by your surgical team)
  • Persistent or long-standing pain
  • Workstation, posture, return-to-work and return-to-sport advice
  • A second opinion on a diagnosis, scan result or exercise plan

When we may recommend face-to-face instead

  • Post-fracture rehabilitation, or a recent injury where significant ligament damage is suspected
  • Problems where hands-on examination is needed to reach a confident diagnosis
  • When your progress would clearly benefit from manual therapy
  • Significant communication, hearing or technology barriers that video can't overcome
  • Where your insurer requires an in-person appointment

If this applies, a face-to-face session will be organised at Salus Wellness Clinic, Cambridge CB2 1NS, or we'll direct you to the most appropriate service near you.

How it works

Your virtual appointment, step by step

Book online

Choose a virtual appointment in our online calendar and pay securely at booking (or provide your insurer's authorisation number). You'll receive a confirmation email with your secure video link and a short pre-appointment questionnaire.

Comprehensive assessment

We talk through your symptoms, history, general health, work, activity and goals. Roshan then guides you through movement and functional tests on camera, and screens for anything that may need medical attention.

Diagnosis & discussion

You'll get a clear explanation of what is most likely going on, what is driving your symptoms, what to expect, and your options - including whether any investigations or onward referral are needed.

Personalised plan

Together we agree goals and a plan: education, activity advice, a progressive exercise programme and guided self-treatment. Your programme is sent through a secure digital exercise tool with videos and instructions.

What's included

Exercise prescription

A tailored, progressive programme delivered through a digital exercise tool, with technique checked and refined on camera.

Guided self-treatment

Self-mobilisation, pain-relief and load-management strategies you can use yourself between sessions.

GP / consultant liaison

A written summary on request, and direct liaison with your GP or consultant where further input or management is needed.

Getting ready

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Device: a smartphone, tablet or laptop with a working camera and microphone. A laptop or tablet propped up gives the best view for movement tests.
  • Connection: a stable Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection. Test your link a few minutes beforehand.
  • Space: a quiet, private room with enough space to lie down, stand and move freely. A chair, a step or stairs, and a mat or towel can be useful.
  • Clothing: loose or sports clothing so the area being assessed can be seen (e.g. shorts for knee problems, vest top for shoulders).
  • Information: a list of your current medications, relevant medical history, and any scan reports, X-rays or letters from your GP or consultant.
  • Questions: jot down what you'd like to ask and the main way the problem is affecting your day-to-day life.
  • Be safe: please don't join while driving or in a public place. Have your phone nearby in case the video drops.

Before your first appointment you'll receive

  • Booking confirmation and secure video link (no app download needed for the call)
  • A short health questionnaire
  • Our Virtual Consultation Policy and consent information
  • An option to share scan reports or letters securely in advance

At the start of the call we'll confirm your identity, the address you're joining from and a contact number. This is a standard safety step for all remote consultations.

Virtual physiotherapy is not an emergency service

Please call 999 or go to A&E if you have back pain together with any of the following: new numbness around the genitals, buttocks or inner thighs; new difficulty passing urine or controlling your bladder or bowels; or new weakness in both legs. Also seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden severe headache, signs of stroke, or a hot, swollen, very painful joint with fever.

For urgent advice that is not an emergency, contact NHS 111 or your GP. If urgent symptoms are identified during a virtual appointment, Roshan will refer or signpost you to urgent or emergency care, with a relevant referral letter.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

About virtual physiotherapy

Does virtual physiotherapy actually work without hands-on treatment?

For most musculoskeletal problems, yes. The parts of physiotherapy with the strongest evidence (a thorough assessment, clear explanation, a graded exercise plan and support to stay active) can all be delivered by video. If hands-on assessment or treatment would genuinely help, Roshan will tell you and can arrange an in-clinic appointment in Cambridge.

How can you assess me if you can't touch me?

A large part of musculoskeletal diagnosis comes from your history: how the problem started, what makes it better or worse and how it behaves. On camera, Roshan watches how you move, guides you through specific tests and functional tasks, and may ask you to apply gentle pressure yourself to locate tenderness. Drawing on his First Contact Physiotherapy and triage experience, he also screens for features that might suggest something other than a musculoskeletal problem.

I'm not sure if physiotherapy is right for my problem.

That's very common. Please fill out our enquiry form with your questions, and we'll get back to you within a few hours and no later than 1 working day. If physiotherapy isn't the right option, we'll explain why and point you towards the most appropriate service.

Can I switch between virtual and in-clinic appointments?

Yes. You can book a face-to-face follow-up directly after your virtual initial assessment or any virtual follow-up, and many patients combine both. In-person appointments take place at Salus Wellness Clinic, Norman House, Cambridge Place, Cambridge CB2 1NS.

Booking & referral

Do I need a GP referral?

No, you can refer yourself directly. If you are claiming through private medical insurance, your insurer may ask for a GP referral or authorisation code first, so please check with them.

Do I need a scan before my appointment?

No. Most musculoskeletal problems can be diagnosed without a scan. If you already have X-ray, MRI or ultrasound reports, please share them before your appointment. If Roshan feels investigations would change your management, he'll explain why and discuss the options.

Where do I need to be for a virtual appointment?

Our virtual service is for patients physically located in the United Kingdom at the time of their appointment. This is because professional registration, indemnity cover and access to local emergency and NHS services all depend on where you are. If you'll be abroad, please contact us before booking.

Do you see children and young people virtually?

Virtual assessments are usually for patients aged 17 and over. Young people aged 16 can be seen with a parent or legal guardian present for the whole consultation. Please contact us first so we can check virtual care is appropriate.

On the day

What equipment do I need?

A smartphone, tablet or laptop with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a private space with room to move. No special equipment is needed; we can adapt exercises to what you have at home.

Do I need to download an app?

Not for the video call. You join through a secure link in your browser. Your exercise programme is delivered through a secure digital exercise tool; you'll receive an email with access details after your appointment.

What happens if the video connection fails?

Roshan will try to reconnect and, if that isn't possible, will call you on the phone number you've provided to continue by telephone or rearrange. You won't be charged twice for a session that couldn't be completed because of a technical problem on our side.

Are sessions recorded?

No. We do not record virtual consultations, and we ask that patients don't record sessions without discussing it first. If an image or short video would help your care, we'll only take it with your explicit consent and store it securely in your clinical record.

Treatment, fees & policies

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition and goals. Some people need one or two sessions with a clear self-management plan; others benefit from a short course of follow-ups. Roshan will give you an honest estimate after your initial assessment, and you're always in control of how many sessions you book.

Is virtual physiotherapy covered by health insurance?

Many UK insurers cover remote physiotherapy. We are recognised by AXA Health, WPA, Aviva and Vitality. Please contact your insurer to confirm cover and obtain an authorisation number before your first appointment.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or rearrange. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice and missed appointments are charged at 100% of the appointment fee. Full details are in our Virtual Consultation Policy.
